Our first new-house "party"

This past weekend, my parents came to visit for the first time since we moved into the new house (they've been traveling and at the lake for most of August!) - it was really nice to be able to show them the progress we're making with getting settled in and making this house a home.

Saturday morning, we were scheduled to pick up a kitchen table that we'd found on Craigslist. That turned out to be a bit of a fiasco (pro tip: measure the table and your vehicle prior to pick-up, in order to ensure that the table will actually fit in the car...) but after a few hours, I successfully had a beautiful table set up in my kitchen. Hooray!

My parents arrived mid-afternoon, and we went out to lunch at a local Italian restaurant before heading to BJs for a giant shopping trip. I do love to take advantage of my parents' membership and buy things like several hundred coffee filters and a million trash bags. I also love having storage space for all these things now!

Saturday night, we planned to cook dinner to celebrate my dad's birthday - it's actually tomorrow, but C will be out of town this weekend, so we wanted to have our own little celebration. Our first little "party" at the new house! Last weekend, I asked my dad what he'd like us to cook for his dinner. He hesitated just a moment, then said "schnitzel! and Spätzle!" ....only in my family. ha! Well let me tell you - if you request a German birthday dinner, a feast is what you shall get.

On the menu: jagerschnitzel (schnitzel with mushroom sauce), salad with traditional yogurt-dill dressing, pickled red cabbage, and Spätzle. Dinner was delicious, and we all stuffed ourselves. I loved being able to cook dinner in my kitchen with the family gathered around the island, with enough space to actually cook and visit, without standing on top of someone or something! Space is such a luxury.

My cute parents!

We also did a German beer tasting with some beers I found from Wegmans - which was really just for fun. It mostly consisted of us taking a few sips of each and saying either "mmmm!" or "blech!" Very professional, we are!
Not a great pic, but my two favorite guys & my great new table!
On Sunday, my mom and I went for a walk / run at a park up the street, and then we went to the movies. Mom & I saw Lee Daniels' The Butler, and my dad and C saw Elysium. Splitting up for movies is so great - everyone ended up happy. After the movies, we went for brunch before my parents headed back home. It was a beautiful day, and we sat outside and enjoyed the weather while we ate.
I do love a good Bloody Mary!
It was a great weekend, and one of the first where it truly felt like we were able to enjoy our new home. I am looking forward to many, many more birthday celebrations here, and lots more fun times with friends and family!
